He was on the team that fielded an all-black starting lineup and reached the 1966 championship team, facing off against coach Adolph Rupp and Kentucky. The Wildcats would not integrate their team until 1972.

Armstrong was one of four individuals, along with the 1990 Raytown South High School boys basketball team, inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday in ceremonies at the Ramada Plaza Hotel & Oasis Convention Center in Springfield.
