- The story of Jacques Mesrine’s time in Quebec, from 1968 to 1972, circulates within popular memory in jumpy and episodic form. Mesrine’s stay here was punctuated by bank robberies, a kidnapping, prison breaks and rescues, flight to the U.S., and a trial for murder in Gaspésie. With time, the sequence of these events has become hazy, and the threads connecting them are easily lost amidst the busy drama of a period sometimes considered Quebec’s Golden Age of outlaw crime. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, robber/adventurers like Mesrine, working with only a handful of accomplices, had largely displaced the business-like syndicates who typified Quebec criminality in the 1940s and 1950s. Mesrine arrived in Quebec the year after Monica la Mitraille (“Machine-Gun Molly”) was shot to death following a string of spectacular bank robberies in the Montreal area. Machine Gun Molly is hardly one of the best films of all time to come out of Quebe.
No, I wouldn't consider this one of the best films to come out of Quebec ever...it just isn't so....
The film takes an awful lot of liberties that are certainly not based in fact at all.
I grew up in Montreal during those days......the city did have it's share of interesting characters, mafia, and other gangster elements including the Dubois brothers gang (French Mafia if you will), the West End Gang with Frank Dunie Ryan who was assassinated in 1984, the Catroni family and on it goes.
Machine Gun Molly, as stories go, was rather a side show but one that attracted the imagination of many of lesser means in Quebec....indeed she was a sort of folk hero....some would say, in the same manner as Richard Blass was.
Entertaining.....somewhat, exceptional....no!9/10
One of the best films ever made in Québec
The star-studded cast delivers in spades and the story is perfectly rendered. This is a classic of Canadian film, better than Bonnie and Clyde. Céline Bonnier shines as Monica, more than holding her own against fellow Québec cinematic heavyweights Patrick Huard, Roy Dupuis, Marc Labrèche and omni-talented Rémy Girard. The story itself refers to
