    Murtala Hammanyero Nyako

Admiral Murtala Nyako and I in Throughout the period of my youth that I spent in Nigeria, people automatically assumed I was a Northerner because of my physical features and the way I dressed. Many Southerners then found some of my habits weird, such as touching my heart after I shook their hands. It led to the rumour that I was using that tactic to steal their destiny.
Actually, it is just the way the Muslim Ummah greet, and if you have lived around them, you imbibe some of their practices. It is more cultural than religious. It is what is known as a Bidah in Islam, meaning a cultural innovation that is not haram.
In Southern Nigeria, I would not have put my hand on the shoulder of an older man. But such was the warmth and generosity of spirit of Admiral Nyako that he did not mind.
